Panel discussion on “Future-proofing our economy: Nature, growth and resilience

I joined Councillors and Officers, including Council Leaders, for a very interesting and frankly shocking session on climate change.

We were shown a film that is being promoted around the country, the National Emergency Briefing. Any MP’s who were present at the original event can surely not fail to understand the scale of the problem and the need for action.

Unfortunately, there is still significant number of climate change deniers, or man made climate change deniers, who think we shouldn’t be doing anything about the problem ourselves and that all the science that supports the call for action is no more than some sort of conspiracy.

Hopefully, the current extreme weather that we are enduring will help wake up the general population to the problem and start to understand that the solutions being proposed can be to all our benefit, including our children and future generations.

A very simple example of one thing we can do is to consume a little less meat and dairy and a little more in the way of vegetables. It doesn’t mean cutting things out of our diets completely, (as is often portrayed), but just making an adjustment. It would be a double win because such a change helps reduce carbon emissions but helps us stay healthier.
