2026 – THE YEAR OF THE APP….

Man in pink shirt smiles by purple flowers, potentially related to app development trends.
I know that apps have been about for a few years now and most of us are using them via a mobile phone or smart TV. From what was a new innovation a few years back, barely a day goes by without somebody encouraging me to download the latest app with an implication that my life will be so much better if I comply.
The thing that concerns me is where this is all going. Nobody seems to have control over the process of what is a major societal change.
I had an account with a building society, with a pass book and the opportunity of visiting a branch in Southampton. It’s closing, along with a trend that seeing the loss of many other building societies and banks, the only choice left is to go online.
Fair enough, you say, isn’t this a reflection of the way the public want to access services? The answer is “Yes”…. BUT…. what about the people, even older than I am, that don’t possess a smartphone ? Digital exclusion is a real thing.
I have seen people being put at a distinct disadvantage by changes that are being implemented without consent. It’s the same with Council Services. Hampshire County Council won’t let you phone the local library these days. You cannot book an appointment to visit the waste tip by phone…. it’s all online. This from an organisation that proclaims it looks after everyone.
What sort of society is it that casts aside older people, as if they don’t matter? What for some of us is innovation is for others exclusion. Should older people have to rely on their children or grand children to help them ?
Technology should serve people, not determine who is entitled to dignity.
