A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS…..

Do you have a mug or a spoon that you like to use all the time? I certainly do… also a plate and a bowl and some items of clothing, including some well worn mustard trousers.

I was wondering why it is that people get so attached to certain material things.

Having a favourite mug, spoon or chair is a fascinating example of human psychology. Several factors help explain why we become attached to everyday objects.

Familiarity plays an important role. Psychologists describe the mere-exposure effect, whereby we tend to prefer things we encounter repeatedly. We know how our favourite mug feels, how its handle fits our hand and how comfortable it is to use.

Routine is another factor. Using the same object becomes an automatic part of everyday life, reducing the need for small decisions and providing a sense of stability.

Emotional attachment can also develop. An ordinary spoon or mug may remind us of a loved one, a happy memory or a particular period in our lives.

Finally, familiar objects provide a small sense of comfort and control in an unpredictable world.

The interesting point is that an object’s value is not necessarily financial. Its familiarity, memories and place in our daily routine can make it almost irreplaceable.
