I was delighted to be gifted this book by local author, Mark Ranger. He recognised my interest in all things to do with nature and has written this book that is all about a local patch I know so well, Bartley Water.

This book will be of special interest to local people who know the river. In each chapter, he visits a section of the river, accompanied by a friend or former work colleague, sharing the magic of the place. It is the nearest you will get to a love affair with a river. It is primarily about connection, with place and people.

Mark is a very talented writer. I got through the book in a little over a week, hungrily lapping up all the references to all the different sections of the river I know so well. He has excellent knowledge of the local flora and fauna and it inspires one to check out a few things you may not know!

A lot has been written about the River Test but it is unusual for Bartley Water to be given the attention this has. I would even venture to suggest it is a “first” ?

I did chuckle at the idea of somebody so much younger me reminiscing about the old days. From my perspective, it seemed a little odd but you will always find things that you can relate to closely and other things, less so.
