I think the person who invented infinity scrolling has a lot to answer for….. how many of us have fallen into the trap of forever scrolling on our phones or i pads on a search for the next dopamine hit, which is delivered whenever we chance upon something really interesting or funny ?

It is so very easy to spend countless hours on Instagram or Facebook, having only picked up the phone to do a quick check on what’s new.

They say that all this is having a profound affect on average attention spans, which have shortened from over two minutes to something like 47 seconds in recent years. It is making it more difficult to read books where pleasure is derived at a much slower pace.

I have noticed that young people find it harder to talk to other people, especially using a phone, having grown up with social media apps and texting.

Apparently, all this is having a measurable impact on our brains, so it is a public health issue and one that probably isn’t being properly addressed.

Maybe a good start would be to limit the use of devices in the case of children. You see them walking to and from school, constantly staring at their mobile phones and barely aware of their surroundings.

Perhaps, I becoming a bit of a curmudgeonly old git, but the pace of technology seems to be fast outpacing our ability to evolve.
