I took this photograph some years ago. It shows Ipley crossroads in the New Forest, just outside Marchwood.

It was a notoriously dangerous junction. Between 2001 and 2019, there were multiple incidents, often involving cyclists, including fatalities.

As people familiar with the New Forest will know, it is very hard indeed to implement changes in areas like this, a site of Special Scientific Interest. The changes that were made involved Hampshire County Council, the New Forest National Park Authority, Natural England and The Verderers.

Looking back now, the changes made….removing the crossroads and making it a staggered junction have proved very succcessful and I have no doubt have saved many potential incidents and quite possibly more fatalities.
